As we eagerly await seeing Russell Crowe in Darren Aronofsky’s Biblical drama Noah next year, the actor is already lining up a new project that’s being shopped around the American Film Market. Deadline reports Crowe is set to lead Fathers and Daughters, a new drama from director Gabriele Muccino (The Pursuit of Happyness, Seven Pounds). The film follows a father and daughter who live in Manhattan 25 years apart. Jumping back and forth from the 1980s to today, we follow each of their lives, seeing how the former years have effected the present. In addition, Amanda Seyfried has taken the role of the daughter.
In the 1980s, the story follows a famous novelist and widower (Crowe) who struggles with a mental illness, hindering from effectively raising his 5-year-old daughter. The contemporary part of the story follows the daughter as a 30-year-old woman where she still suffers from the terrible experiences she had growing up with her mentally ill father. Newcomer Brad Desch (Shotgun Lovesongs) wrote the script which is being produced by Voltage Productions. Of course, since this is an American Film Market project, there’s no guarantee it will actually get off the ground.
Still, Muccino is very excited about the project saying,
“This is a performance-driven movie, and therefore I couldn’t ask for a better actor than Russell to deliver this intensely emotional drama. It’s edgy, heart-wrenching, and uplifting at the same time. To me, it feels like a classic American movie that recalls the great character dramas of the 70s like Kramer Vs. Kramer and One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest.”
Will Muccino round up any other cast members from the recent adaptation of Les Miserables? That remains to be seen, but he has two solid leads, which might be enough to make this work.
